The WIC participants were recruited over a 6-month period from 4 counties in East Tennessee.

A purposive sample (ie, nonrandom sample selection based on population characteristics and study purpose) 15 was used to recruit participants. Purposive sampling is widely used in qualitative research and was used in this study to identify information-rich cases that had knowledge about both the paper voucher and the eWIC system. Tear tab flyers were hung in WIC offices and Head Start centers. Take-home RESULTSĪ total of 24 individuals who were primary food shoppers for WIC households participated in the study. One interview was excluded because of incomplete interview status, yielding a final analytic sample of 23. The interviews lasted an average of 44 minutes, 45 seconds (SD, 11 minutes, 18 seconds).

Almost all (96%) of the participants were female.
